Over the years, mapping has evolved from 2D line work on hard copy sheets to data files that capture the true 3D nature of the world. Many people find it difficult to visualize just what information a traditional plan view map contains. Since today's data files contain the necessary data, it is a logical extension to present this data in 3D perspective views. These views can make it much easier for most people to relate map content to the real world, and make a dramatic new presentation tool as evidenced on the front page of this website. These visuals are most often used to display existing conditions or impacts and to relay concepts and plans.

Mapmaker can use the data from any of our projects to construct 3D perspective scenes in a variety of ways. The vector mapping (or a subset of specific features), orthophoto imagery, or both can be draped over a terrain model of the project area and viewed from any position at any angle and zoom. Features that are above the surface, such as buildings, poles, signs, trees, etc., can also be modeled in as much detail as desired. The scenes are typically saved as JPEG files at high enough resolution to look good on an "E" size print.

In addition, we also have the ability to generate animated "fly-through"s of the project data with the same features depicted as in the single scenes. The camera can follow any path at any speed over, around or through the data set. The movie files can be delivered in a variety of formats.

Since the views and movies are generated from the 3D data sets, we can also incorporate your design data into the process. This would give you the ability to look at the completed project before construction actually begins and makes an excellent presentation to permitting authorities.

Mapmaker also does not have to be the origin of the data set. Virtually any 3D data can be input, so your existing information can be used as well.
